Garner State Park, 9/12 - 9/13/15

30. Scampsite #413 - on the quieter side of the park!   (The campsites closer to the dam and Old Baldy trailhead are loud, partying areas.)  Before dinner, we hiked to Old Baldy, which afforded lovely views of the area and the Frio River.  We hiked back via the Bird Trail, which was also lovely. Sunday we walked the Frio Canyon Trail, which was lovely.  At the river, we splashed all the way back to our campsite.  The river was gorgeous and felt wonderful on our legs and feet.  We had the river almost entirely to ourselves on this stretch, so it definitely did not feel like the dam area, which can be crowded.

The CCC was active here from 1935 - 1941, building the entrance, park residences, visitor cabins and the concession building.

Garner is nearest to Uvalde, which is a cool little town.  It's a Texas Main Street City, home to a national fish hatchery, the John Nance Garner Museum, and lots of little shops and restaurants.   The courthouse and the Grand Opera House are both beautiful.
