Longhorn Caverns State Park, 5/25/15

28. We stopped here on our way home from Inks Lake and took the guided tour of the caverns.  It was awesome!  The recent rains meant there was water inside the caverns, which was really cool and unusual.  The caverns were actually excavated, mapped and preserved by the CCC between 1934 and 1940.  They also constructed a gorgeous headquarters building and other buildings.

Outside the caverns - all that water is unusual and it was drizzling while we were there.

The nearest county seat is Burnet, which is a lovely little town.  Eagles nest near Burnet every winter at Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park, there are also good shopping, antiquing, restaurants and at least 2 vineyards in and around Burnet.  The courthouse is lovely too, and you can take the Austin Steam Train from Cedar Park to Burnet.

On our way home from this park, Central Texas experienced horrific flooding and tornadoes.  We received weather alerts on our phones almost the whole drive home about tornadoes less than 20 miles away!  It was certainly a memorable drive home.
